Thistledown, The Basket Case Shiraz
If you haven’t already discovered elegantly bold Shiraz red wines from Australia, perhaps it’s time you found out for yourself! This is a perfectly priced example oozing with the region’s great quality!
Country of Production: Australia
Region: Barossa Valley
Producer: Thistledown Wine Company
Tasting Notes: Soft glossy and perfumed with lush black fruits, almost creamy with a hint of liquorice on the palate. There’s a good texture with loads of fruit bursts revealing great structure and balance. Effortlessly drinkable.
The Barossa region has a warm continental climate with a multitude of soil structures. The Basket Case Shiraz is produced using old vines and judiciously irrigated middle-aged vines. Working with a spread of trellised and bush vine vineyards, the consistent factor is limited yields and balance.
The grapes are sourced from growers all over the region, with a leaning towards the northern end of the valley where the fruit is dark and crunchy. The fruit is picked “on the way up” to total ripeness and then given a gentle cold soak before fermenting and basket pressing. Ageing is done in 300 and 500 litre barrels, predominantly French and only ever about 25% new to allow the fruit rather than the oak to dominate the wine style and flavours.
Blend: Shiraz 100%
Oak Treatment: 9 Months in French and American oak (20% new oak)
Bottle Size: 75cl
Closure: Screw cap
Drink: Enjoy from now until 2024
Suitable for Vegetarians: Yes
Suitable for Vegans: Yes
This strong red pairs well with robust foods such as a delightful rack of lamb. If you want a warm yummy peppery explosion every time you have a mouthful – try it with spicy food such as Indian or Mexican – though be warned… this isn’t for the faint hearted!

Thistledown are based in South Australia and create classical Australian wines with a Celtic twist. Founded by Giles Cooke (MW) and Fergal Tynan (MW) both Masters of Wine, these boys met the evening before they started their course. They hit it off straight away and inevitability knew that one day, they would make wine together.
Giles has experienced winemaking in Spain, California and Australia and he’s pretty much obsessed with bringing Australian wine to the world stage.
Fergal has experience of winemaking in Europe, South America and Australia. He developed his true love in Australia with the people, the regions and the wines.
Together, they produce hand-crafted wines in small batches mainly working with Grenache, Chardonnay and Shiraz grapes.
Setting out to make wines that reflect the personality of the place, the growers and of course Thistledown Wines, they aim to make wine of great purity, precision and energy with deep flavours and complexity. Fruit is sourced from many of the best sites in South Australia and they work with growers who are committed to viticulture with relatively low yields to enable concentration of flavour.
Industry experts say…
Gary Walsh, Winefront, Australia “Quite spicy for a Barossa wine – brown spices to be specific, raspberry, some liquorice and malt, wood well in the background. Medium bodied, dry and crunchy feel with a nice spread of fleshy tannin, red and black fruit and savoury flavours. Has a bit of finesse and perfume about it, but still speaks of region and variety.”
