Ferghettina, Franciacorta Milledi
A fantastic quality vintage sparkling wine from northern Italy.
Country of Production: Italy
Producer: Azienda Agricola Ferghettina
Tasting Notes: Fresh and elegant with white flower and citrus notes. The palate is complex with brioche and more citrus characters giving a lovely weight and texture. The mousse is fine and persistent.
Milledi is produced solely from Chardonnay. The grapes are softly pressed with a pneumatic press, and only the first pressed juice is used. The primary alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 16-18°C. The grapes from each vineyard plot are vinified separately and kept apart until the spring following harvest, when after careful tasting the assemblage is decided. Secondary fermentation is in bottle, and the wine spends 36 months on its lees.

The citrus characters of this superb sparkling wine team wonderfully with lobster au gratin, grilled fish and sushi! Try with red mullet in a light tomato sauce, or with sun-dried tomato risotto with scallops.

Ferghettina is a family winery – established in 1991 by Roberto Gatti, and run with his wife Andreina, and their children Laura and Matteo. Starting with just 3-4ha of vineyard and a small production of Franciacorta Brut, Ferghettina has now grown to become one of the finest Franciacorta wineries with 200ha of vineyard across 11 different villages.
Each vineyard confers a unique character on the resulting base wine, giving Roberto a broad spectrum of styles to blend for each cuveé. It is this skilful blending, meticulous attention to detail and long bottle maturation that give Ferghettina’s wines great finesse and individuality.
Matteo designed the eye-catching, square-based bottle used for Milledi. The triangular, flattened sides provide a surface area around two and a half times greater than that of a standard bottle, giving more lees to wine contact and therefore greater complexity.
Ferghettina are now in the process of organic conversion.
Wine experts say…
Delicate alluring scents of citrus blossom, white stone fruit and bread dough float out of the glass along with a whiff of dried herb. On the palate, a refined mousse backs up white peach, yellow apple and toasted hazelnut. (Wine Enthusiast)
Awards and special notes
Milledi means 1,000 days and is a nod to the time this Chardonnay-based sparkler spent on lees. Pure, precise with a lovely mineral/acid thread, white peach and apple.
