Producer Information

The winery is located in Samaniego (Rioja Alavesa), and is surrounded by 65 hectares of vineyards aging between 35 years and 110 years old.

These small plots are characterized by their locations and unique microclimate. The vineyard offers low production levels with bunches of small grapes of excellent quality.

Wine experts say…
Amaren has lots of loyal fans who show their loyalty by being aware that because of their limited production, these wines cannot be found in large quantities in the shops and restaurants. Just as exclusive are the customers who are looking to find in them the kind of elegant, subtle wine with lots of soul for them to truly enjoy.

Five of the seven 3-star Michelin restaurants in Spain feature wine from this winery on their menus.

Awards and special notes

Notwithstanding the absence of a major wine industry award, Bodegas Amaren has the best accolade possible; a personal tribute from the owner Juan Luis to his beloved mother, Angeles. In 1995, keen to express the personality of the Tempranillo variety, Juan Luis was planning to make a different kind of wine; 100% Tempranillo from several plots of old vineyards.

Angeles died and it was at that time that Juan Luis created his new fragrance: Amaren. This was to be his tribute. In Basque, Amaren means “of the mother” and thereafter, Juan Luis worked to honour his mother with her own winery, founded in 2016.
